Irons narrowly beaten in Juventus showdown

West Ham were denied a penalty shoot-out with Juventus today in the Betway Cup final at London Stadium.

The Hammers started the match badly, going 2-0 down as Paolo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic scored early on in the match. Andy Carroll managed to bundle the ball across the line and get one back for West Ham, which saw the visitors take a one goal lead in at half time.

Carroll managed to level the score from a header in the second half, which rounded off a fine display by the big man. However, substitute Simone Zaza, who the Irons have been linked with signing this Summer, managed to break away from defender Reece Oxford and calmly put the ball in the back of the net for a Juventus win.

A good second half performance from the Irons wasn’t enough to get a result against the Italians, but Bilic will be happy to have gotten his three Euro 2016 stars back with the West Ham squad. Dimitri Payet came on as a substitute with 20 minutes to go, and was welcomed home with a standing ovation and cheers of ‘We’ve got Payet!’
